NORIKO ASATO, Ph.D.

Associate Professor

Aloha, I’m an associate professor in the Library and Information Science Program at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, specializing in Asian Studies Librarianship.

My research intersects between libraries/archives and the histories of Asia and Asian Americans using the lens of human rights, especially intellectual freedom and cultural sustainability.

I lead the Asian Studies Librarianship Pathway and offer courses, such as Asian Research Materials and Methods, and Asian Informatics: both are one-of-a-kind offerings. The pathway is designed to prepare students with Asian language(s) background for Area Studies librarian positions working with China, Japan, Korea collections.

Students can focus on this pathway or pursue it as a “specialization” along with the Academic or Archive Pathways. Please feel free to contact me if you have some experience in Asian languages, history, culture, or arts, and want to explore this pathway/specialization.
